History

In the spring of 1998, P.J. Buijs decided, after seeing a shocking documentary on the “beaching of ships, that, in the interests of people and the environment, this gruesome process of ship dismantling must end. Buijs approached D.S. Mulder and H. Beekhuis to request their help. Following a number of failed attempts to pass on their enthusiasm for the plan to various parties and government organisations, it was decided to abandon the attempts.

At the end of October 2002, an article concerning newly available subsidies for shipyards in the north prompted Mulder to ask Buijs and Beekhuis to revive the 1998 plan. In November 2002, the Stichting Tanker Ontmanteling Platforms [Tanker and Platform Dismantling Foundation] (S.T.O.P.) was set up. With D.S. Mulder as chairman, P.J. Buijs as secretary and H. Beekhuis as treasurer, a start was made on a survey of the operational potential for dismantling and recycling tankers, platforms and other vessels. At the beginning of 2003, owing to illness, it was decided to make H. Beekhuis a non-active board member and to allow N. Vos to act as treasurer in the foundation.

Prior to establishing a concrete plan for the initiative, it was necessary to carry out a general feasibility study. In co-operation with BGP Engineers and with the support of various participants, supporters and sponsors the first phase of the feasibility study was completed in May 2003. The outcome was so positive that it was decided to refine the results of the study. On 6 March 2004, the “NV Ecodock business plan ” was finally presented.

In order to obtain international recognition and potential commissions, and with a view to effective international communication, the decision was made at the end of June 2004 to change the name from Foundation to NV Ecodock. The trade name of “Ecodock” is already well known.
